Austin's Walkable Neighborhoods: What's Your Score?

On a scale of 1 to 100, my wife and I are a 46.

What's your score?

We here at the LivingInAustin.com offices have been fascinated lately with the WalkScore.com website. Enter any address, and the site will tell you - on a scale of 0 to 100 - exactly how walkable the area surrounding that address is.

Here's how the scoring works:

  • 90–100 = Walkers' Paradise: Most errands can be accomplished on foot and many people get by without owning a car.

  • 70–89 = Very Walkable: It's possible to get by without owning a car.

  • 50–69 = Somewhat Walkable: Some stores and amenities are within walking distance, but many everyday trips still require a bike, public transportation, or car.

  • 25–49 = Car-Dependent: Only a few destinations are within easy walking range. For most errands, driving or public transportation is a must.

  • 0–24 = Car-Dependent (Driving Only): Virtually no neighborhood destinations within walking range. You can walk from your house to your car, that's it.
According to WalkScore's ranking, Austin is the 29th most walkable city in the nation.

The most walkable neighborhoods in town include downtown Austin, the UT area, Old West Austin, Bouldin, the Triangle, central east Austin and Hyde Park.

At the very bottom of the list is southeast Austin, which is singled out as the least walkable area within the city of Austin. However, there are several subdivisions outside the city limits of Austin that would also earn the same low score.

I'm thinking of moving to Austin, but one of the major things holding me back is that I don't have a car. I'm not familiar with the city, so could you tell me if you see this as a problem if I live in one of these "walkable" areas?
